GRCC's First Black-Owned Business & Vendor Showcase

February 26th 2-6pm, Open to Public to Come Shop

The Greater Romulus Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) is holding a new event they’re calling the “Black-Owned Business and Vendor Showcase” on February 26, 2022. The Showcase i s free to attend and open to the public. It will be held at the City Event Centre located at 37451 Ecorse Road in Romulus. The City Event Centre is also a member of the Romulus Chamber and owned by Rasaq Gbadamosi, a native of Nigeria. The event is sponsored by another Chamber member - the Telegram Newspaper, a black-owned newspaper that has been serving the area since 1944 and owned by Gina Wilson Steward.

The Black-Owned Business and Vendor Showcase is the newest offering from the GRCC’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Task Force. The Task Force held an “Intro to DEI” event last fall and is also working on a Women in Business Panel Discussion for March. There will be 25 black-owned businesses & organizations featured from Romulus and the surrounding area. A variety of goods and services will be available for purchase including handcrafted luxury skincare products, candles, jewelry, clothing, financial

services and more.

Jazmine Danci, Executive Director for the GRCC, says that, currently, about 10% of the GRCC’s members are black-owned businesses, but they are hoping to see that increase. “Black and other minority-owned businesses are an important part of the

economy. We hope the Showcase will bring together new consumers and buyers, strengthening the whole community,” Danci said.

Morning & Evening Opportunities to Promote Your Business

The GRCC Membership Committee, led by Board Member Leilani Norman of Norman Catering & Events , has planned a new series of quarterly networking events.

Each quarter, there will be two events: one in the morning, and one in the evening, held at different member businesses with light complimentary refreshments provided.

The GRCC hosted a "B2B" networking event on November 18, 2021 at the Romulus Athletic Center. The topic was "Intro to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion" . Local resident & accomplished US Navy Veteran, Verdell Blackmon, was the featured speaker. Thank you to Wings Financial for sponsoring the breakfast refreshments!

GRCC Hosts Meet the Candidates Night

The Greater Romulus Chamber of Commerce is hosting a “Meet the Candidates Night” event on Thursday, September 30th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Romulus Athletic Center.

The public is invited to attend to meet and greet with candidates in the upcoming November local election. Candidates will each have a table with information and be available to talk with and ask questions in a casual & neutral environment. The Chamber has been hosting Meet the Candidate Nights similar to this one for decades.

“This is an important opportunity to speak with candidates on local issues and be an informed voter for the November election,” says Jazmine Danci, Executive Director of the Greater Romulus Chamber of Commerce. “We hope residents take advantage of it.”

For the November 2nd Regular Election there are two candidates for Mayor, one for City Clerk, one for City Treasurer, and twelve for City Council. All candidates have been invited to participate in the event.

GRCC Supports Pumpkin Festival & Parade of Lights

Parade of Lights Held September 15 & Pumpkin Festival on September 16, 2021

We had a great time at the Romulus Pumpkin Festival last weekend! Many of our Board Members were individually involved in the planning & operations for the Festival, but still found time to represent for the Chamber as well! Awesome time for the whole community, happy we could be a part of it!

We had Board Members decorate & ride in the Parade of Lights on Friday Night. This is the first time in many years the GRCC has participated!

On Saturday, we partnered with the Romulus Arts Council on "Boards, Brews & Bags", a corn hole tournament to raise money for charity. Chamber Board Members & volunteers sold wine & seltzers to participants in the area. It was a fun, new addition to the Festival weekend!

On July 21, 2021 the GRCC held a Networking Happy Hour at member, Artisan Reserve Brewery. This was the first time we'd gathered since the height of the pandemic.

More than 30 attendees came with lots of great conversations & connections being made. Looking forward to our next gathering!
